Oxford Spires celebrates National Reading Championship win

Students at Oxford Spires Academy are celebrating after being crowned winners in this year’s National Reading Championship, run by the National Literacy Trust.
The National Reading Championship Quiz is a competition that pits teams from schools across the country against each other in a test of their book knowledge.
The Oxford Spires team scored 53 points out of 80, pipping the second-place team by just one point in a nail-biting final. The team – Seth, Nathan, Kitty and Martha – brought back a trophy that the school looks forward to displaying in pride of place.
Over 500 schools from all regions of the UK started the competition. In the final, Oxford Spires was one of just six non-selective state schools, with all the rest being either independent or selective grammar schools.
Jamie Sheppard, Librarian at Oxford Spires Academy, said: “This quiz is a real test of reading knowledge and our students rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion.
“It was fantastic to see them representing both Oxford Spires admirably, and they fully deserve the trophy they received for winning the competition.”
Louise Cowley, Headteacher at Oxford Spires Academy, said: “We are so proud of our students for winning this prestigious award and look forward to having the trophy on display. Congratulations to the whole team!
“We will continue to encourage our students to take part in competitions like this, helping them to build their confidence and creative expression.”
